My abstract works are primarily based on landscape, architecture, history and the figure;
often overlaping, interplaying and hybridized into something that has deep meaning for me.
I think of these smaller works as both finished, as studies for larger canvases
and commisioned works.

Some Text from the Catalog.
My studio is located in a light industrial area with a mutually shared dumpster; I like to periodically check its contents for possible treasures I might be able to re-purpose into my art. One day in early 2020 I looked inside and someone had thrown away several sheets of aluminum, each approximately 18 x 72 inches in size; I pulled them out and set them aside. At the time the early pandemic forced me into spending a lot more time working in isolation as so many others were now doing during these unpredictable times. I began the year working on smaller mixed media works on heavy watercolor paper. When I realized I was running out of paper I turned to the aluminum sheets I had salvaged a few months earlier; cut them into usable sizes and began experimenting with this new surface; (at least new for me.) I had only painted on metal once, many years before.
Working with mixed media has always been a joy for me, especially when I can work with drawing and painting materials simultaneously; working this way allows for spontaneous mark making and fluidity, building my abstract compositions spontaneously or methodically. Substrate is important in these works; aluminum allows for a clean, smooth surface without tooth or grain like canvas or paper. With a smooth surface I can shape and form line and color with my finger tips without the interruption of unimplemented texture; building layers of color and isolated glazing that create depth and vibrancy. Compositional integrity and cohesiveness is vital and something I have always striven for in my paintings. In these new smaller works I bring together some new, some borrowed and some older concepts to create something I feel is a synthesis of visual, emotional and intellectual exploration.
All of the 35 paintings featured in this catalog were created in 2020 during the pandemic and are painted on the aluminum sheets I salvaged from the dumpster. Created at a time when so many unanswerable questions were made answerable or at least more tolerable for me through the unwanted refuse just outside my door.
